The Department of Pharmacology at Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Paramedical Sciences College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore was established in the year 2003. The department offers preclinical training in experimental pharmacology and toxicology using in silico, in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models for undergraduate and post graduate students and research scholars. The knowledge of preclinical research imparted to these students help them to scale greater heights in both academia and industry. The faculty of the pharmacology department educate the student to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of drug actions and to derive the intermolecular reactions underlying biological systems.

The staff and students of the Department of Pharmacology is actively involved in screening of natural and synthetic drugs/formulations for their pharmacological and toxicological activities in areas related to free radical scavenging activities; synergistic and antibiotic sensitivity testing; enzyme kinetics and its inhibition; CNS disorders like depression, anxiety, learning and memory, neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases; pain and inflammatory disorders like gout, arthritis, urolithiasis; wound healing and tissue repair;metabolic disorders like diabetesand dyslipidaemia; respiratory disorders like allergy and asthma; oral and gastric ulcers; cataract;hepatic and renal disorders; antifertility; polycystic ovarian syndrome; cancer; myocardial infarction; and chronopharmacological studies.

The branch of pharmacology has tremendous scope withwide career options in teaching, new drug discovery and development, clinical research organisations, pharmacovigilance, medical writing and coding, regulatory affairs, R&D, etc., both in India and abroad.

  • There are 02 Ph.D., and 119 M.Pharm who have graduated from the Department. The research outcome includes 125 Publications in both National and International Journals.
  • The department is well-equipped with all required instruments and animals to carry out the preclinical research activities. In addition to the Central Library, the department library houses nearly 500 textbooks and reference titles from various national and international authors.

Highlights of Pharmacology department:

  • Established Zebrafish as an animal model for biomedical research in the department.
  • The department is actively involved in screening of natural and synthetic drugs/formulations for a broad range of pharmacological and toxicological activities.
  • Provides hands-on training in in silico,in-vitro, ex vivo and in-vivostudies.
  • Impart animal handling skills including drug administration, bleeding techniques, anaesthesia and euthanasia of common laboratory animals.
  • The faculty and students of the department have attended and presented their research work in various national and international conferences.
  • The faculty of the department have designed various apparatus which can be employed for the screening of neuro pharmacological activities.
  • The program has enormous scope and our alumini have been successfully placed in teaching, new drug discovery and development, clinical research organisations, pharmacovigilance, medical writing and coding, regulatory affairs, R&D, etc., both in both India and abroad.
